Frequently
Asked Questions
Are
you a conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat?
I have
liberal and conservative views like most Black people.
It really depends on the issue. But one thing is for
sure; I am not a Republican and will never be in the
same political party as Trent Lott and that Delay guy.
Keep in mind though that 60 percent of Black people
view themselves as either conservatives or moderates.
Also, nearly 35 percent consider themselves conservatives.
And yet Black support for the Democratic Party is consistently
hovering around 90 percent. So for the most part, I
view myself as a radical progressive Democrat, to lease
a term aptly coined by Dr. Cornel West to describe his
social and political ideological beliefs. With that
said, it is important to note this also. Some conservative
ideas are actually social value systems inherent in
most of us and not the intellectual property of republican
solons and conservative behaviorists. It is no secret
that there are many Black people who support conservative
ideas, say welfare reform and personal responsibility,
yet remain solid Democrats. So I am a radical Democrat
with a mix of liberal and conservative views. My frustration
with Black Republicans such as Armstrong Williams, Thomas
Sowell, Shelby Steele, Ken Hamblin, Stanley Crouch,
Walter Williams and others is not the conservative views
they hold. Rather, it is their adamant and dour refusal
to admit and confront the racist elements in their party.
